I recently had the amazing opportunity to visit the beautiful Dar Al-Islam mosque in New Mexico with my mom and her husband Paul. From the pictures you might think this is somewhere in Morocco! We drove about an hour and a half from where my mom lives, up into the desert, and driving along the dirt road you could just slightly see the top of the domes of the mosque gleaming in contrast to the desert surroundings.
We went on a Thursday morning, which was the perfect timing as we basically had the place to ourselves. Dar Al-Islam has so many amazingly intricate doors, beautiful arch ways and structures that let a lot of natural light in. Dar Al-Islam was built in the adobe style, which is characteristic of many buildings in New Mexico. I honestly wanted to just stay there all day and sit inside the mosque in one of the rooms filled with sun. I really loved what my mom said to Paul and I as we were leaving; "This place has really positive energy. When a place is used for prayer and contemplation, the positive energy soaks into the walls and into the air."

If you are travelling to New Mexico and have time to go to Abiquiu to visit Dar Al-Islam, here are my tips:
-Check it out whether you are Muslim or not, it was a very peaceful and welcoming place
-Email beforehand to let them know you want to visit. The best time to go is a week day (except Friday as it is the Jumah or Friday prayer)
-Bring a scarf to cover your hair (dress modestly)
